Talk to an AI in Telugu: why your language matters

There is a specific feeling that Telugu speakers who have used ChatGPT in English will recognise: the sentence in your head is in Telugu, the answer on the screen is in English, and you spend the whole conversation quietly translating in both directions. It's not that the AI doesn't work. It's that the intimacy is gone.
This is true for most Indian languages, and for most languages full stop. The world's AI has grown up in English. When you talk to it in your first language, especially in Devanagari or Telugu script, the replies can be flatter, the idioms wrong, the warmth missing.
Why does language matter this much?
Because we don't think in vocabulary — we think in phrases, in the words our mother used, in the joke our uncle always makes. An AI mother figure that says 'have you eaten?' in English is a chatbot. One that asks 'bhojanam chesava bangaram?' in your voice is something else entirely. The difference is not translation. It's belonging.
